Ulcerative Colitis DictionaryA-E | F-J | K-O | P-S | T-Ztenesmus: A common occurrence when bowel disease is present, it is the sensation of needing to have a bowel movement with little or no success; often accompanied by pain and the unintentional urge to strain. toxic megacolon: An extremely serious development in which an already inflamed colon enlarges but does not resolve with a bowel movement; includes symptoms that include fever, dehydration and pain. ulcer: A sore or wound that remains open and is caused by injury or infection and is resistant to healing that can lead to complications at the site or in the bloodstream. ulcerative colitis: An inflammatory bowel disease that affects the large intestine, or colon, and is characterized by ulcerations in some portion (right, left, segments or entirety) usually leading to bloody diarrhea and often with complications in other parts of the body. ulcerative proctitis: A condition that presents only in the rectum with the same inflammatory symptoms of ulcerative colitis. uveitis: A complication of ulcerative colitis, this is an inflammation that affects the eye's middle layer with symptoms including blurred vision and pain, which can lead to a detached retina as well as glaucoma if left untreated.
